Making Column Candles

Published by under Candle Making | Sitemap

Column candles are very similar to taper candles, but they are wider and usually shorter. The top of column candles isn’t pointed like on a taper candle. Instead, it greatly resembles the top of a volcano. Column candles are very pretty and distinct. They have a classic look to them that is timeless. These candles have a ridge design rather than a smooth design like the column candles. They add beauty and charm to any environment. Making your own column candles is very easy.

Column candles burn for hours on end, making them a great investment of both your time and supplies to make them. On average, column candles burn for 35 hours. Column candles do not produce smoke or dripping, making them very popular. Some people experience frustration looking for holders to put their column candles in. They will fit all standard tea light holders and spiked base holders.

You will need some basic items to start making column candles including wax, molds, wick, color, and fragrance. The fragrance is option, but definitely adds appeal to your column candles. To melt the wax properly, you will need a double boiler. You will want to make sure you use high quality paraffin wax to make your column candles. Continue Reading »

Candle Making Courses – Learning The Basics

Making candles can be very rewarding and fun for the whole family. Candle making courses are abundant and very helpful, but I’ve put together some important tips for your first candle making project. Getting started the right way will ensure your success and will save you time and money.

First and foremost, you must set up your workstation correctly. Your equipment, molds, wax, wicks, and heat source should be within reaching distance before you start. All countertops should be covered with waxed paper, and I recommend using multiple layers if you are working on a surface that could absorb melted wax, such as stone or wood. A flat surface is important when you pour the melted wax into a container or mold to ensure a level candle surface.

It’s also a good idea to cover your stovetop before melting the wax. Aluminum foil spread over the entire stovetop will make cleaning up a breeze. Make sure all drip pans are covered, with only the flame or electric burner exposed. Your first few candle making projects will likely involve some spilled wax, but being prepared will save time and frustration in the end.

When you are ready to begin melting the wax, make sure all items you need are close by and within your reach. Items such as the mold or container you are using, the wick material, fragrances and dyes, and any additives should be near the stovetop where you are melting the wax.

There are several ways to melt wax, but I recommend using a double boiler and a melting pot. No need to buy a ‘double boiler’ set. Just use two pots, one slightly smaller than the other, and place one inside the other. The larger pot holds the water that warms the smaller pot containing the wax. Continue Reading »
