Proper road bike clothing provides the ease or movement and wicks away moisture for a more comfortable ride for the cyclist.
Padded Bike Shorts
The legs and rear require a good pair of padded bike shorts. The object of the padding is to prevent any chafing which could occur from the constant friction of the leg against the seat. The padding should be seamless and molded to adapt to the body. It will consist of either a chamois or gel insert. They are constructed out of four to ten panels made of a Lycra microfiber blend. The panels and blended material provide the maximum ergonomic comfort and flexibility. Padded shorts will also have different types of waist construction such as drawstring or elastic, leg grippers to keep the shorts in position, selected reflective material placement, and pockets.
Torso Clothing
A cycling shirt is referred to as a jersey. It has been specially cut and constructed just for the bent over cycling position. The material will wick away moisture and sweat to allow a cooler and more comfortable ride. The jersey is longer in the back than the front to provide coverage in the cycling position. There are also pockets located on the back to prevent spilling out food and other items you carry on your ride.
Feet
Your feet will need specially made bicycling socks to prevent painful blisters and chafing from the repetitive movement of spinning. These socks will wick away moisture and sweat and are pressure point padded just for cycling shoes. Keep in mind that the pressure points are different during cycling than any other physical activity.
Cycling Shoes
You will need a good pair of clip less bicycling shoes. Clip less shoes actually have a cleat attached to the bottom which will secure the shoe in place on the receiving part of the pedal. Your foot will secure into place by either pushing forward into the receptacle or twisting sideways. This provides proper foot placement and prevents any foot slippage during long rides.
Gloves
Your hands will become sore from the added pressure during cycling if you do not wear a pair of bicycling gloves. The gloves have extra padding int he form of gel or extra material on key pressure points.
Winter Wear
There are many additional layers which can be added to provide the necessary warmth on cold weather rides. Glove liners, arm and leg liners, shoe bootie covers, and helmet covers will all provide the extra warmth to your body.
